I suspect that some sort of an update causes the icon I was suggesting to them to test with the test box taking regular virus signatures updates, just like my PCs. Interestingly though, why can't they reproduce the same behavior that I experience regularly. Which is hide the icon, or SEP application purposefully resets that setting under certain circumstances.

So, whatever setting controls the icon visibility either gets damaged for SEP icon and Windows uses the default behavior, That by default an icon (say for a newly installed app) goes to the hidden icons drawer and something must happen to make the icon visible. It's probably the same interface that Settings app uses when I click the slider to make the icon visible or hide itself. I'm sure that there is a programmatic interface for the applications to control whether their system tray icon is visible or not. May be done by any of 30 or so executables or 160 dlls in the SEP installation Bin directory, or 10 executables or 45 or so dlls in Bin64 directory. I have searched ccSvcHst.exe service executable (which is the only one running) for the "hide" and "icon" strings using Process Explorer (Process\Properties\Strings), but none were found. So, my guess is that whatever is happening to the setting that controls visibility happens after the reboot (when the master service starts), but before I login.

The icon gets hidden on a reboot, meaning when I shut down the PC the icon is still visible,īut when I login after reboot the icon is already hidden. There are 2 entries there, Symantec Service Framework and ccSvcHst.exe (which is the actual service executable), and both are set to On. I use the sliders (Settings\Personalization\Taskbar\Select which icons appear on the taskbar) to make the SEP icon visible or simplyĭrag it to the visible icons. If you have feedback for TechNet Subscriber Support, I was asking the Symantec support tech the same question, but he insisted that I contact Windows support.Īnyway, there has to be some sort of individual key or something for each icon that controls whether it's visible or not. Please remember to mark the replies as an answers if they help and You could try to use the process monitor to capture the process and filter whether there is a similar registry key(Ctrl "F" then search for key word "hideicons" or "autohide"). I am not sure whether that application has a similar registry key to control it. I found it is controlled by the following registry key. I am a little confused why they will blame the issue to Windows system.Īnyway, I made a test to hide all the desktop icons. Since the issue only occurred with the specific applications` icon and it occurred with all the systems. Settings\System\Notifications and actionsĬonsidering the issue couldn`t be reproduced by the Symantec support, we may consider to reinstall that application to have a test. What can make Windows hide the icon without user's action? What's so special about Symantec Endpoint Protection icon? Has anybody else seen that behavior?įor the icon configuration, we could check the following configuration. On my computers, but it hasn't happened at Symantec lab for over a week. I need to point them at the right direction, but I can't figure out why this is happening constantly The Symantec support is pretty clueless of what may be causing that and as typical with tech support they point the finger "at the other guy". If it was a Windows issue, it would affect more than one icon, but so far it's the SEP icon that keeps going to the hidden icons drawer every couple of days or even more frequently. None goes to the hidden icons drawer on its own. I have several other icons that I keep visible in the system tray and they all stay I argue with them that SEP is the ONLY icon that keeps hiding itself on its own. This became a really annoying in Windows 10,īut it also happened with Windows 7, albeit far less frequently (once every few weeks or so). They say that they can't recreate the problem and that's a Windows issue as Symantec doesn't control the visibility customization setting. I've opened a support case with Symantec as this became very annoying. It usually doesn't take more than 3 reboots (I usually boot up once a day, so at most 3 days)įor the icon to disappear from the visible system tray icons. On its own it decides to go to the hidden icons drawer sometimes on the next reboot. Unfortunately, SEP icon will not stay visible for long. I'd like to keep certain icons visible in the system tray for status of the application at a glance, quick access to settings, etc. I use Symantec Endpoint Protection as my antivirus solution. I've got this weird issue happening on multiple computers.
